QUID PRO QUO - MERCENARY MONETIZATION - Part 2

Dear Readers:

As you may recall, I was making a point yesterday regarding receiving value in exchange for value. Also, as is my custom, I was cynically taking a "wait and see" approach, almost anticipating (dare I say "hoping"?) that my quarry of the day, Mr. John DiPrete (a fellow Braintenance enthusiast) would reject my request to have my link, http://braintenance.blogspot.com/, posted on his site.

After reading John's response this morning, it is truly a sad day for cynics, skeptics and negativists. He not only offered reciprocity (which is the key to all commerce), but proposed a tagline to accompany my link, to be placed on his website. Today, the U.S. government reports the jobless rate up to over 7.6% -- despite this tragic news, I have gained 1) a new friend, and 2) a very encouraging new perspective...that by working cooperatively and with some old-school kindness, we can entrepreneuially muscle our way out of any recession. Adam J. Kovitz may be on to something revolutionary with his whole RELATIONSHIP CAPITAL idea. Thank you, Adam.

QUID PRO QUO: MERCENARY MONETIZATION

Dear Readers:



For most of our lives, we are constantly told, "Do kind things without asking for or expecting anything in return." Yet another is that, "It is better to give than to receive." My personal favorite is that, "Charity begins in the home."



These are wonderful thoughts, and represent virtuous conduct to aspire to. Sadly, in the world of business and commerce, all actions are based upon an exchange of value -- whether it is direct and immediate, or whether it is more subtle and occurs over time. If you do not request value in return for what you offer, people will 1) oftimes regard you as either eccentric (if your are wealthy), or stupid (if you are living on the fringe of abject poverty), or 2) think that what you are offering is of no value.

Human nature requires the rationalization of quid pro quo. Commerce cannot even exist without it. Even my sainted mother has uttered to me in a rare sentient moment, "You get what you pay for! Whatja expect?"



While I am not a mercenary, I do believe in the notion and the precedent of a fair exchange. Regarding this, I have copied some correspondence which was sent to me, as well as my response, regarding one of my blogs, called BRAINTENANCE (http://braintenance.blogspot.com/) , which is becoming increasingly popular -- in fact, you should visit it, favorite it and subscribe to it.

February is here, and the economic challenges that face individuals and businesses through the world are still are the forefront of all of our thoughts and actions. Personally, I have found that the best action to take when your are feeling overwhelmed, anxious and depressed (and perhaps a bit impoverished) is to take positive definitive action. If you are overwhelmed by the distance that you must traverse...take the first step...then take the second. Every so often, look back and praise yourself as you chart your progress from the starting point (where you felt helpless and paralyzed) to where you've gotten.

Every problem is a challenge. And every challenge is an opportunity to grow stronger, better and more confident. Every seemingly insurmountable problem can be broken down into small, "doable" components. If you learn to proceed incrementally (one of the basic tenets of Internal Energy Plus), you can solve any problem and meet any challenge with courage...with the knowledge that you are on a linear path to achievement.

Focus on what you can do, and do it. Forward momentum overcomes depression, inertia, doubt and fear. MOVE FORWARD.
