Like anything else, the real art of networking is much more than meets the eye. Simply meeting someone and having a conversation, while it's a step in the right direction, is just the beginning of the process.

A networking contact has to a) have the ability to refer your services. i.e. have a substantial sphere of influence; b) want to endorse you by referring you to members of his sphere of infleuence: and c) feel confident that there will be a reciprocal benefit provided by you for him. It follows that you must be careful in selecting your contacts, in terms of their professional expertise, reputation and availability to you.
A networking friend has to turn into a synergistic business relationship, akin to all business relationships. You must truly add value to each other.
