Customer Repellant!

CUSTOMER REPELLANT!

Dear Friends, Colleagues, Readers, Writers, Wranglers and Wrestlers:

I just received the unsolicited ad, which follows, in my spam filter. I fished it out (rather like using a twisted metal coat hanger in the toilet bowl in order to retrieve your family heirloom ring, which you discovered missing from your finger only after having done your business) for show and tell ...by the way, while this is a disgusting simile, it has the benefit of being unique and memorable. But I digress.

Few of us are overly fond of Google (or Microsoft, or the cable company, or any other impersonal utility upon which have come to depend), but we quietly kick and curse and get on with our lives.

Negative campaigning by candidates for elected office has become the political norm throughout most of the world. And now, lamentably, negative campaigning is becoming the norm in commerce -- instead of focusing on our virtues and strong points (I am still looking for mine, by the way), we exploit the public's dissatisfaction with our competition, and focus our message on hate-mongering.

Commentary: If you want to stand out, speak of your product's or service's strong points. And if you choose to be negative about the competition (by way of comparison), keep anger, profanity and hatred out of it -- use humor, or irony or gentle wit to make your point.

When you use hate, dissatisfaction and other negative emotions as your focus, you may indeed get your point across. But underneath it, your audience will be resentful of your approach, and less trustful of your, your products or service, or even your ideology. Generally speaking, audiences do prefer substance to slander, and merit to maliciousness.

Global Edge Technologies Group LLC and Speedlight Pro Kit (companies in which I have an interest, admittedly) recently put up a post that has been getting wonderful responses and great reviews.

You can find it at: http://speedlightprokitusa.blogspot.com/2009/11/when-you-need-lighting-effects-use.html .

I'll admit it; we had fun. Yes, we said some ridiculous things -- but we were not unkind. We were even (I daresay) a bit playful. What do you think?

In direct contrast, the negative ad which I "fished out" of the commode with my twisted coat hanger follows (the guy didn't even capitalize my first name!):

Hi douglascastle, it's Milty Mayer from The Free Ad Forum.

I just posted a video on my blog showing how I am getting keyword
targetted traffic like Google Adwords for just 1 cent per view of my website.
Check it out here.

I am already getting real sales and signups from this traffic source without all
the hassles of dealing with Google. Check out my video here on my blog.

Nothing to sign up for or buy. Just check out my video here for free and
let me know what you think in the comments section of the blog.

Thanks!

It's really simple. The higher ground (at least superficially) carries more credibility and appeal in the public marketplace, and in the court of public opinion. I am not suggesting that you become a Pollyanna; there's very little credibility in that posture, especially in these very skeptical times. But what I am suggesting is that you put your positives forth up front, and take on your adversaries in good-spirited humor.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
