The Only Legitimate Reasons to Work Without Collecting An Immediate Fee.

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Accidental Opportunists:

If you are offered an assignment (any task), or if you have taken the lead in offering to perform any work, deed or action without collecting an immediate fee, and it cannot be explained by one of the motivating factors listed below, then you are not acting of sound mind (i.e., you're rationalizing), and might as well paint a big red bullseye on your posterior, and a large red "X" on the top of your head (to make it easier for an aerial attacker to target you).

Said more kindly, if you extend yourself for any reason other than one of those listed below, you are being a chump. Here are the acceptable, sensible reasons:

1. You are acting out of genuine compassion or charity;

2. You are returning a favor that has already been rendered to you, and honoring a promise;

3. You are advertising or promoting your name, your brand, your product, your service or your abilities;

4. You are using the sweat of your brow to gain entrance, membership or equity in something with great promise -- something in which you truly believe;

5. You are participating in a non-professional activity that you truly enjoy...one that benefits your psyche, your spirit or your health.

If you are working diligently at something and have not collected an immediate fee, either you have been conned by false premises or promises, or you are conning yourself.

Never Forget:  Your expertise, time and efforts (no matter how seemingly limited) are worth something. They each have value. One of the quickest ways to devalue yourself, your time and your abilities is to give them away for free, to the wrong people for the wrong reasons. The more of this conduct that you demonstrate, the more people will generally demand of you and the less willing they will ever be to pay you. Keep you own, true motivations and feelings in clear perspective -- always.

Be kind to the extent that you can, but don't be abused. Allowing yourself to be abused is very habit-forming. It can poison you.
