Reconnecting with Relationship Capital

Reconnecting with Relationship Capital

by Adam J. Kovitz

(reprinted, with permission, from The Mind of Adam J. Kovitz)

It has been a while since I spoke about Relationship Capital in The National Networker Weekly Newsletter, but recently, I've found myself waxing nostalgic.  I felt a bit "out of touch" with the person that I was back in 2007 when the notion of researching, quantifying, calculating and eventually, adopting, the "who we know" was just germinating in my mind.

I recently went back and read my original work to get perspective on my influences at the time and realized the following:
1.)  The National Networker Weekly Newsletter was, at the time, 100% focused on networking - we were the "Consumer Reports of Networking" and it was my absolute passion...and obsession.
2.)  I was looking to find the hardcore mathematical answers to the many facets of human interaction that I have observed over the years.  Plenty of "gurus" would talk about networking and how to do it effectively, but I was absolutely tired and bored with the same, played-out tactics - I wanted to know the whys - no one ever addressed this.
3.)  I was fascinated with the research of my friend and colleague, Scott Degraffenreid of Necessary Measures, who dealt with the millennial generation, their coming into the work force and their impact on employee retention and corporate culture.  According to Degraffenreid, this generation is unlike anything we have experienced.
4.)  I was concerned with money at the time, both from the standpoint of how to take my publication that completely overshadowed my consulting practice into a state of profitability as well as the "writing on the walls" that there would be some form of economic meltdown.

Considering how much things have changed over the nearly four years that I began my fascination with Relationship Capital, including the people with whom I communicated my ideas, it began to make sense to me.

Much has changed for me since 2007 - my company, my focus, my network, my ideas.  Much was "put on hold" and much has "seemed" forgotten.  After all, Relationship Capital is, admittedly, an idea that has been called "ahead of its time", "impractical" and/or "too academic".  I suppose it's not easy being an unknown revolutionary.

But here's the interesting thing...my ideas and concepts have attracted a small contingent of followers who apparently "get it".  Some people have heard about me through others I used to work with.  When commenting about this to those with whom I speak on a more regular basis, they all say the same thing:  "where can I find out more about this 'Relationship Capital' of yours."

The answer is:  scattered across the internet, a book, several speeches.  No easy "go to" place where everything is compiled in one easy reference.

I know that I have a new book in the making - not just The Emergence of the Relationship Economy, to which an entire chapter (Chapter 15:  "The Relationship Capital Factors") is devoted to the "Ten Laws of Relationship Capital", but a stand-alone tome compiling the countless hours of time I devoted to "RC", the more detailed articles I presented in The National Networker and the countless speeches I gave on the subject to such organizations as the Project Management Institute.

I have decided that the time has come for me to "dig out" my old notes, articles, etc. and re-post, re-publish, re-edit and remark in one place that makes sense before penning the vast tome that will encompass my life's work - in my own blog - in my own spare time (ha ha)

Read it or not - some will get it, some won't.  Some will love it, some won't.  Read it if you dare, or if you consider yourself a true desciple of RC, or if you have the intestinal fortitude, or if you're just bored and have nothing else to do...it matters little to me.

One thing I know for sure...I must reconnect and write about it now.  I have the forum to do it, in a place where I can trade my business hat in for my academic hat (yes...even my own sons call me "nerd" and are proud of it).

Sure...you will still continue to see the re-posts of "A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER" from The National Networker on [The Mind of Adam J. Kovitz], but you will also find (as time permits), my thoughts on Relationship Capital - an idea that may, someday, change the world as we know it.

Stay tuned...there will be more to come...I promise.
