Mysteries Make Great Stories but Have No Place in Your Business

Mysteries Make Great Stories but Have No Place in Your Business

by Adam J. Kovitz

(originally published in The Mind of Adam J. Kovitz)

I grew up watching a lot of mysteries as my Father was always a big fan;  everything from classic Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan to "Murder She Wrote".  The the challenge one has of uncovering the clues, synthesizing them into suspects, motives and conclusions and calling the villain out in front of the panel of suspects in one dramatic and thrilling conclusion along side one's favorite detective can be quite the rush...

...except when you have a business to run.

Don't get me wrong, most of us (including this recovering engineer) appreciate a good challenge every now and then.  An opportunity to solve a problem that no one else can can be quite a thrill, but the real challenge (especially if you're the CEO) is refusing to accept the status quo. Often however, without proper ambition and communications, problems can linger and fester to the point where no one talks about it or addresses it - everyone just accepts it and before you know it - a mystery unfolds.

As the CEOs of our own emerging enterprises, it behooves us to rise to the challenge, and accept ultimate responsibility for such issues.  After all, no investor wants to hear the CEO say "I don't know" or "umm" (stuttering is also equally ineffective in such situations as is the "deer in the headlights" look).

And what if we left our best sleuthing gear at home and have no way to solve the "Mystery of the Dysfunctional Organization" on our own?  Delegate it to a team member!

What?  Don't have a qualified team member who can solve the problem?  Find one, and quick.  Business waits for no one, especially an entrepreneurial concern.

So whether you plan to hire your own P.I. or you plan to don your own overcoat and magnifying glass, solve your business problems quickly and take control of your company's future...

...and leave the mysteries to the writers.

All my best,

Adam
