Cyberian of Networking
For years I've been trying to find someone to cover LGBT networking. I researched local, national and international networking avenues, but no luck. What I did find out is that while it may be politically correct for large companies to reach out to the LGBT community when it comes to hiring and offer an open and work environment often including onsite networking opportunities, the stigma against LGBT persons in small business circles seems to persist.
At any rate, during my online scouting time I came across a site called Glee.com which was aimed at the LGBT community as well as equality-minded straights and asexuals. I explored the site for a few months but failed to make any real conenctions. About this time last year I received a friend request from Barak Obama. That was so cool. A straight, married soccer mom getting a friend request from a straight, married presidential candidate. Sure, I realized that it was someone from his camp looking to gather points with the LGBT community, but there was something so appealing to me that Obama understood how to reach out to online communities and make everyone feel included. It really strengthened my opinion that the vote of the individual was important. When individuals are willing to put aside their differences we can all get down to actionable change. And there is certainly a lot to do.
