Prevention and Treatment of High Blood Pressure - Various Conventional and Alternative Approaches

Prevention and Treatment of High Blood Pressure - Various Conventional and Alternative Approaches.

Note: This article is does not offer medical, health or fitness advice, and is provided for acadmentic and interest purposes only. All information is made availab elt o you for you consideration in conjunction with the advice of your healthcare professional. This article was written by Douglas Castle http://aboutDouglascastle.blogspot.com  (Featured Columnist for the National Networker Weekly Newsletter) and the author of The Global Futurist and a host of other publications, media and blogs.

High blood pressure (hypertension) is  a condition which can rapidly develop and actually cause death with a minimum of telltale symptoms. Hypertension is becoming increasingly common, incresingly severe, and is invariably diagnosed and treated. It can be caused by emotional stress, physical stess, poor diet, a lack of exercise, overweight and genetic factors. Ahough it might not preventable, it can be kept under control.

According to the American Heart Association nearly 1/3 of the adults (people over 18) have high blood pressure but nearly 1/3 of those don't know they are sick. This is because high blood pressure is a silent killer, with little to no symptoms.

Current guidelines for blood pressure are: normal is below 120/80, prehypertension is between 120/80 and 139/89 and hypertension is 140/80 or greater. A further distinction is made for those who have blood pressure greater than 160/100 as stage 2 hypertension.
Although doctors can't identify a definitive cause in 95% of people diagnosed with hypertension, they do know there are some lifestyle choices that can be modified and which will cause a decrease in the measurements. These lifestyle modifications are the first in a line of alternative treatments for hypertension. The first lifestyle choice is weight. The greater the body mass the more pressure exerted on the arterial walls and more oxygen that is required to feed the tissues of the body. By reducing your weight to normal limits you'll be able to effect a significant change in your blood pressure.

Some of the basics follow:
1. minimize your salt (and sodium) intake;
2. drink plendy of water and dilute fruit juices;
3. reduce caffeine intake;
4. avoid excessive use of decongenstant or stimulant formulas;
5. maintain a healthy, light bodyweight;
6. meditate and de-stress as often as possible;
7. get constant cardio-vascular exercise;
8. Take time to breathe slowly, deeply and deliberately;
9  Use positive mental visualization to the greatest extent possible;
10.See your health care provider frequently in order to monitor your pressure - You may also be helped with prescription drugs

Some Alternative Therapies and Substances which may indeed be worth your investigation:
1. Take significant effective doses of L-Arginine, a natural amino acid which helps to increase the amount of Nitric Oxide in the Bloodstream;
2. Take reasonable does of Foic Acid along with vitamin B12 (this combination reduces blood homosysteine as well);
3. Take reasonable amounts of Hawthorne supplements;
4. Taking garlic in a small medicinal dose is thought to be helpful in aiding arterial and veinous health;
5. Taking small amounts of flush-free Niacin is a cholesterol clearing agent, and a de facto widener of the arteries as plaque is kept from forming;
6. Taking small amounts of Coenzyme Q10 might also have a favorable effect on vessel wall health, plasticity and longevity.

DrugWatch.com - An Important New Resource for Links 4 Life [Public Service Announcement]

DrugWatch.com - An Important New Resource for LINKS 4 LIFE

Dear Friends:

A growing percentage of the U.S. population, including and increasing number of young children and teens, is taking prescription medications. Many of these individuals are taking several different prescription drugs simultaneously, for treatment of conditions ranging from ADHD to osteoporosis. More and more of us are taking antidepressents and antianxiety medications - sometimes, in a potentially dangerous scenario, we are taking several different drugs for several different purposes prescribed by several different healthcare practitioners.

Without passing judgment on the large pharmaceutical companies, the Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) and the healthcare community, the sobering reality is that many of these drugs have dangerous side effects, dangerous (and potentially lethal) contraindications when combined with other medications (both prescription and over-the-counter nutrients). Due to a healthcare sytem in need of some logistical and ethical realignment, each of us, as a patient, or as a friend or family member who cares for someone who takes prescription medications, must be his or her own researcher and advocate.

While there are many sources of information about the side effects, contraindications and interactions associated with medications, most of the information available is provided by the large pharmaceutical companies -- the same companies which sponsor most drug research and testing -- the same companies which stand to profit by maximizing drug sales through expanding the prescription drug culture through lobbying in Washington and at the "grassroots level" -- hospitals, physicians and other healthcare practitioners are inundated with marketing materials and attention from representatives of drug companies eager to increase marketshare by increasing awareness on the part of practitioners of the availability of new drugs, each packed with a very substantial margin of profit while under patent.

There is a potentially dangerous conflict of interest when drug companies yield such sway over the Legislature and over the healthcare practitioners and virtually all of their professional organizations. Go into any practitioner's office and you will see an array of sticky notes, scribble pads, paperweights, pamphlets, pens and advertising specialties bearing the names of various new drugs or drug manufacturers.

Your doctor might have free "starter samples" of various drugs given to him to encourage him to give them out to his or her patients as if they were treats, or Halloween candy. Doctors' offices and healthcare institutions are beseiged by representatives from these companies every single day, and they are courted for their "business" non-stop.

Before you fill a prescription for yourself, or for someone in your family, you must get unbiased, uncompromised information from some reliable sources about what the potential is for negative effects from those drugs, either when taken alone, or when taken in conjuction with other substances. If you have certain health problems, some of these drugs have the potential to make them worse. Certain people can have allergic reactions or suffer terrible, irreversible side effects when given either the wrong medications, or doses which are simply too high for safety's sake. Be your own advocate, and an advocate for those whom you love.

Before you take any medication, even if your doctor strongly advised you to take it, get information about the medication. Firstly, ask your doctor -- he or she has an obligation to advise you, to the best of his or her knowledge and ability, as to how important it is that you take the medication, the appropriate range of dosages, possible side effects and potentially harmful drug interactions. Don't be afraid to ask questions. and after you have gotten some information from the prescriber, do your own research.

An excellent new resource for information of about drug dangers, interactions, side effects can be found at http://www.DrugWatch.com. They are a self-funded organization without affiliations with any medical associations or pharmaceutical companies, and they have a constantly updated data base of information about all of the most commonly prescribed medications. I have found their information to be well-detailed, well-researched (well-supported by evidence) and organized in a very user-friendly and accessible fashion..

As of today, LINKS 4 LIFE is adding DrugWatch.com to its resource list. We'll be placing a direct link to their website on this site and on other sites and media with which we have an affiliation. Please note that neither LINKS 4 LIFE nor any of its sponsors has any financial or other business interest in DrugWatch.com.

I would also suggest that you make a list of the prescription medications which you are taking (as well as the prescribed dosages), and look them up on DrugWatch.com's site. It pays to educate yourself, and when it comes to matters of your health, sooner is always better than later.

Their information follows below:

ANGER AND YOUR HEALTH - A Public Service Announcement

ANGER AND YOUR HEALTH - A Public Service Announcement

Dear Friends:

It's nothing new; we all understand that anger is an emotion, which if left unchecked can ultimately hurt our health. Bottled-up anger actually creates physical as well as emotional problems that can lead to sickness, and even death.

A study, presented by Andrea Thompson, Senior Writer for Live Science, discusses who tends to be the most susceptible to anger, what its effects may be, the different ways in which people express it and in which it manifests itself, and what can be done to either control it or to channel it so that it does the least damage.

Yes; anger can be reasonable, it can be a source of motivation or inspiration, or it can even be an important psychological defense mechanism -- but pent-up, unresolved anger over a prolonged period of time is almost always unhealthy. We hope that you'll find this article to be informative and helpful. The first step in solving a problem is always awareness.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle (http://aboutDouglasCastle.blogspot.com)

Study Reveals the Angriest Americans

Anger is more likely among the young, those with children at home, and the less educated, a new study finds.
A national survey of 1,800 Americans aged 18 and older questioned participants on how and when they feel angry in order to build "a broader social portrait of anger in the United States," said study researcher Scott Schieman, now at the University of Toronto.
These angry emotions range from mild annoyance to yelling and feelings of outrage.
While anger is a normal human emotion, it could be detrimental if you hold on to it too long. And those who express their anger might actually live longer than those who keep it bottled in, one study found.
The results of the survey, conducted in 2005 and to be published next year, showed several key connections to anger.
For one, people under 30 experienced anger of all forms or intensities more frequently than did older adults. This was mainly due to the fact that young people are more likely to be affected by three core stressors that can trigger angry feelings, Schieman said:
  • Time pressures
  • Economic hardship
  • Interpersonal conflict at the workplace
Time pressures had the strongest link to anger, especially low-grade versions termed "feelings of annoyance," the study found.
Those who were under financial strain tended to report higher levels of anger, a connection that could be particularly important in today's flagging economy, Schieman noted. The financial influence tended to be stronger among women and younger adults.
Having children was also associated with angry feelings and behaviors, such as yelling, particularly in women, the survey found.
"There's obviously a lot of joys and benefits that come with parenthood," but other aspects of parenting, such as having to discipline a misbehaving child, can cause feelings of anger and annoyance, Schieman said.
Those with fewer years of education were also more likely to report feelings of anger and were less likely to respond proactively in a situation that made them angry (for example, talking about what made them angry).
"It underscores the power of getting more education," Schieman said. Education has been linked to feeling more self-control, which could be why those with more education tend to manage their anger more proactively, he told LiveScience.
Schieman's findings will be detailed in a chapter of the forthcoming International Handbook of Anger, to be released in January 2010.
