Your Friends? -- Who And Where Are They?

Dear Readers:

In a conversation with Rhonda Sher, we somehow got onto the topic of friends, and of friendship.

In these days of social networking platforms, rapid-messaging and  contact "list-building," we use the term "friend" either too loosely, or too optimistically. It seems that we can have as many "friends" as we want, as long as we 1) never ask anything (i.e., help) of them, and 2) we have something to offer them (i.e., money, valuable connections, technical or specialized knowledge). Pity.

As a little boy, I thought that what we asked for, and what we had to offer in return from and for our friends was simply friendship. It was a sympathetic ear, comfort, advice, time together, helping eachother, protecting and defending eachother -- all in the name of  friendship.

How many of your contacts are friends? Take an inventory.

When the wheels fall off of your life, when the storm clouds rise over your head, when you are misjudged, slandered, trivialized, unpopular, threatened.....just how many of them would stand by you? How many would see you through? Ask the same of yourself, as a friend -- given the same set of circumstances with one of your contacts, would you be a confidant, a protector, a defender.....a friend???

I am afraid that the notion of pure friendship, and all of the interpersonal goodness that it offers, is almost extinct. Despite the emails, networking communities, tweeting, buzzing, and local business roundtable meetings, we are growing increasingly insular; isolated; guarded.

What I offered to Rhonda (and she has offered me much in return) was my definition of friendship derived from very painful personal experience. The definition requires a test in adverse circumstances...

"Your friends are those people who come running in when everyone else is running out."

Don't let the notion and practice of friendship die. Ultimately, all things being considered, friendship is the greatest gift one person can give to another, and the greatest honor that one person can bestow upon another.

May you be blessed with friendship. May you be a true friend, and may you be enjoy the security, freedom and unbridled happiness of true friendship. That is my wish for everyone.

True friendship brings out the divine element which exists within each of us. It is interpersonal harmony.

THE GICBC MOVEMENT

The Governments of the world, the capital markets, the major banks (and the lesser ones who avoid loan defaults by never rendering favorable credit decisions) and the large corporations do little, if anything, to encourage innovation, new and emerging business enterprises, the entrepreneurial spirit and the amazing technological breakthroughs, vital productivity and permanent employment opportunities that we create. And they are doing less and less.

As a matter of fact, big business and big government dance together and almost never let small business or emerging enterprises cut in. They are far too busy taking money from the taxpayers, or printing fiat currency, or rolling the dice with the future of the majority of people living in the world, to dance with us. They ignore us. Even though we were the spark that ignited their very existence, they have co-opted our ideas (when they haven't suppressed or outlawed them) and are quite content as long as they can enjoy a high standard of living.

These desk-dominating entrenched dinosaurs are eating the food off of our plates...they are living a lavish lifestyle, and have shut the door behind them -- right in our faces. They offer no help. Ironically, emerging enterprises are the principal source of all economic productivity and true economic growth!

The most essential component of true productivity in any socio-economic system is the entrepreneurial segment. We are the true leaders, the true drivers and the ultimate salvation of a world economy which now serves only a select few at the expense, and to the unconscionable detriment, of many.

For those of you who are paying attention to global economics, you must be wondering how all of these great (but somehow corrupt and hideously incompetent institutions) can't seem to understand this: You cannot get out of debt by incurring more of it. The game of paper shuffling and musical chairs is fast coming unraveled. You must be productive and profitable to turn an economy around. Accounting tricks and frankensteinian "programs" and "restructuring" are merely band aids on cancer.

The entrepreneurial spirit and initiative must be encouraged, supported, stimulated and given resources --

We, the bearers of the only true keys to the creation of a peaceful and prosperous society and a booming, thriving economy, have had our supply lines cut by these large wastrels. They are interested only in keeping their power, their wealth, their freedom... and their domination of all things.

As entrepreneurs and leaders of emerging enterprises, we often get discouraged because we feel too small to be noticed; we feel isolated and lonely. Many formerly creative people have spent so much time on the corporate career path that they find themselves not only unemployed, but feeling helpless -- like de-clawed cats in the lion's den.

The fact is, esteemed colleagues, that as long as we remain isolated from each other, and as long as we are divided we will not be able to get the resources and access which we need to be fully successful.

A small company operating alone does not have the clout to negotiate better pricing from suppliers and insurance carriers, or to attract operating capital, or to hire and pay for all of the talent that they truly need, or to get the services and support that would expedite their growth, or to gain sufficient media coverage and branding that their sales would "go vertical." As isolated creatures, we struggle more than we truly have to, and we are fated to make very slow progress at great risk and expense.

The concept of the GICBC (the Global Interworked Cooperative Business Community) offers the ideal solution. It allows every entrepreneur to retain his or her individual identity, while being a member of a much larger, more powerful group -- virtually an economy unto itself.

Can you picture this? -- An association where each Member promotes each other Member's products and services as well as its own? An association where risks are pooled and shared. The Inherent Power of an Organized Group

Synopsis

When a number of people gather together in the genuine spirit of cooperation and collaboration, and in the sincere interest of solving any problem or in achieving any goal, the likelihood of the Group’s success at its accomplishing its agreed mission will increase exponentially with: 1) the size of the Group; 2) the quality of the Group’s strategic plan; 3) the diversity and complementarities of the resources and skills brought to the Group by each Member; 4) the level of resources and skills brought to the Group by each Member 5) the ability of the Group’s elected or appointed leaders to keep the Group’s focus on the mission and to responsibly empower each Member (through careful delegation) to his or her highest and best skills and purposes; 6) the strength of the bonds of trust and empathy between each and all of the Members of the Group, and 7) the righteousness or goodness in the objective sought.  – Douglas Castle

Definition of Terms

For the purposes of this discussion, the following terms are used in the following manner:

1).  The size of the Group = the total number of Members;

2).  The strategic plan = the “road map” to be used as a guide and reference for the Members of the Group to follow in order to proceed from the day of the Group’s formation to the day of accomplishment of its mission;

3).  The diversity and complementarities = the variety of skills and resources brought to the Group by each Member, and the manner in which those skills and resources can be applied to each incremental step of accomplishing the mission;

4).  The level of = the degree of competence at accessing and applying any resources of skills by a Member;

5).  The ability = the same meaning as in the term “level,” above;

6).  The strength of the bonds = the cohesiveness, pervasiveness and persistence (especially when challenged) of these critical interpersonal elements;

7).  The righteousness and goodness = While these may be seen to be subjective terms (and understandably so), a Group focused on accomplishing a mission that is in harmonious accord with the highest values and ethics of its Members will tend to follow a straighter course to completion, with less discord along the way. It is also, in essence, easier to put one’s unfettered intellectual abilities, strength and actions to something that is a matter of pride and principle. Shame and subterfuge detract from the probability of success in any individual or Group endeavor;

8).   Exponentially = in an increasing, compounding multiple. Exponential expansion is far greater and faster than simple arithmetic expansion. Two minds working collaboratively are a force far greater than the mere sum of the two minds…three minds working collaboratively are a force far greater than the product of two minds working collaboratively.

Note: I often use the term “Critical Mind Mass” to represent the number of individual (i.e., Member) minds working collaboratively to achieve a breakthrough idea or action. One of the ultimate products of exponentiality is an accelerated possibility and increased probability of a breakthrough or multiple breakthroughs.

9).   Cooperation = an interpersonal configuration in which each of the Members agrees to abide by a set of rules or principles agreed upon and set forth by the Group, and does so;

10). Collaboration = an interpersonal configuration in which each of the Members uses his or her resources and abilities to enhance the thoughts or actions (through something akin to an infinitely expanding feedback loop) of each of the other Members, and of the Group.

If a Group is to optimize the potential advantage of its power, each of the Members must perform a critical role for the benefit of the entire Group. A Group is a multi-cellular organism, with each Member comprising one of its vitally-needed, constituent cells. Non-functioning or under-functioning cells diminish the organism’s ability to survive and thrive. Agitated and dangerously conflicted cells operating contrary to the accomplishment of the organism’s mission and with a propensity to enlist or transform other cells to act similarly are analogous to cancers – not only will they diminish the organism’s ability to survive and thrive, but, if left unchecked, they will tear the organism apart, causing it to collapse upon itself, terminally disabled.

Cellular cohesion is absolutely necessary; insidious, contagious and unproductive conflict is fatal. It sounds trite, but it is true of the cells of any organism, or of the Members of any organization – “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.”

Those who seek to immobilize, conquer and enslave others, deliberate seek to divide those others, and to turn them against each other. Sadly, we Humans tend to be an insecure and short-sighted lot, and we fall into this trap repeatedly…never knowing that the only victors will be those who are behind the scenes; the puppeteers seeking to rob us of power, confidence, momentum and the joy of community. 

Despite my having said this, please bear in mind that some element of conflict (emerging from within the ranks of the Members or cells) can be productive if it takes the form of reasonable analysis, reassessment, or refinement.

A question, a pause for further thought, or a suggested change (when presented in the proper spirit and forum) can be sources of conflict, but they are like the body’s own sensorial feedback – they serve the higher purposes of possible course correction and the potential acceleration of the accomplishment of the mission. In the Human experience, questioning very often fosters the creation of better solutions, or reaffirms (by testing and tempering) the validity of an existing system of belief or a chosen course of action.

An Example of Group Potential Being Actualized

QUESTION: What might a well-organized, focused, dedicated group of 100,000 persons accomplish during a single year, if each Member would contribute, on average, the sum of $10.00 per month for each of the twelve consecutive months?

Here are a few examples. This list is by no means exhaustive, and it does not include popular but notoriously historically ineffective activities, such as signing a petition, staging a demonstration, boycotting a product from any country, or other such activities. These are all means of getting attention, but “raising consciousness” is merely one of the first steps in the productive process of creation of great new things, or of changing the existing, flawed institutions or policies. To truly effect change, you must work both within and outside of the established systems, and you must take precipitous action. Our Group can:

• Purchase a controlling stake (or at least enough of a stake to call a shareholders’ meeting and require an audit of the books or a vote on a critical issue) in one or more publicly-traded companies;

• Start an independent credit union;

• Start a venture capital fund and create numerous entrepreneurial “incubators”;

• Create a branded affinity “credit card” ;

• Negotiate deeply discounted health and business insurance plans for self-employed persons and smaller-sized (by employee count) emerging enterprises;

• Act as a co-operative and to obtain discounts from choice vendors and service suppliers;

• Get any website, blog site, person, product or brand to be listed in Google’s top ten ranked research results;

 This is indeed something worth thinking about. More importantly, by far --- it is something worth planning and doing.

Dear Friends:

Comedian Steven Wright tells a story about walking around his neighborhood wearing socks of two different colors. When a woman asks him, "Do you know that your socks don't match?" he replies, "Sure they do. I don't go by color-- I go by thickness."

Last evening, my wife asked me, "What's the difference between loquacious and garrulous?" I quickly replied, "The spelling."

Of course she had intended to ask, "What is the difference in meaning between loquacious and garrulous?"

The lesson is a simple but important one: The quality and usefulness that you will get in response to a question will be influenced by the way in which you word the question. Imprecisely worded questions lead to misinterpretations, and misinterpretations lead to inefficient and unproductive conversation.

Worded slightly differently: If you ask questions with a high degree of specificity, you greatly increase the probability of your getting answers that are meaningful. You may discuss the implications of this this with any attorney who has gone through the exercise of examining a person on the witness stand.

The Only Way: A New System

Dear Friends:

We Humans fight about everything. We do battle. We believe that for every winner, there must also be a loser. We believe that "no good deed goes unpunished." We believe that it is our very nature to be self-destructive and to engage in counter-productive behaviors.

We are approaching a point in our sociological and societal evolution where some very calamitous things will indeed happen unless we seize this very moment to create a new type of sustainable, growth-oriented survival strategy.

We cannot afford to think of "them" and "me." We are already on board this ship together, and it is "US".

For the new system to work, it must incorporate the following line of code:

"I can help myself only by helping others. Others can help themselves only by helping me. " 

It seems obvious. What are we doing to reprogram ourselves?
