Managing: Yourself, Your Employees (Or Team), And Your Managers.

There are three levels of management: managing yourself; managing your employees or team; and, managing your managers. Each requires different skills, and you must master each level before you can proceed to the next. Most entrepreneurs and aspiring leaders spend their entire working lifetimes struggling with the first level.

We are all actors, playing certain assigned roles in our various businesses. I have found that in order to become an effective manager, you must graduate, at some point along your career trajectory, from being an actor to being The Producer. We move from being actors to "acting" as producers.

Acting, and working in concert with other actors (interacting, quite literally), gives you the inside vision to know what you can come to expect as a producer.

Analogously, in the corporate or organizational world, it is best to have been an employee in the department which you will ultimately manage. The greatest challenge, however is to graduate from being a manager to a corporate or organizational leader. You must know enough about role and operations of every department to be able to manage all of your managers. This is a quantum jump -- to manage managers.

You'll find it more difficult to manage managers than to manage employees. There is generally more ego invested, more of a feeling of possessiveness to be overcome, and a fear, on the part of every manager in your charge, that he or she will be subjugated into once again being merely an actor or actress. People dislike demotions, perceived or real.

You always have to manage; it is a part of life. However, a career in management requires that you learn to manage others, as well as yourself.

Good luck.

Faithfully,

Douglas E Castle

Mysteries Make Great Stories but Have No Place in Your Business

Mysteries Make Great Stories but Have No Place in Your Business

by Adam J. Kovitz

(originally published in The Mind of Adam J. Kovitz)

I grew up watching a lot of mysteries as my Father was always a big fan;  everything from classic Sherlock Holmes and Charlie Chan to "Murder She Wrote".  The the challenge one has of uncovering the clues, synthesizing them into suspects, motives and conclusions and calling the villain out in front of the panel of suspects in one dramatic and thrilling conclusion along side one's favorite detective can be quite the rush...

...except when you have a business to run.

Don't get me wrong, most of us (including this recovering engineer) appreciate a good challenge every now and then.  An opportunity to solve a problem that no one else can can be quite a thrill, but the real challenge (especially if you're the CEO) is refusing to accept the status quo. Often however, without proper ambition and communications, problems can linger and fester to the point where no one talks about it or addresses it - everyone just accepts it and before you know it - a mystery unfolds.

As the CEOs of our own emerging enterprises, it behooves us to rise to the challenge, and accept ultimate responsibility for such issues.  After all, no investor wants to hear the CEO say "I don't know" or "umm" (stuttering is also equally ineffective in such situations as is the "deer in the headlights" look).

And what if we left our best sleuthing gear at home and have no way to solve the "Mystery of the Dysfunctional Organization" on our own?  Delegate it to a team member!

What?  Don't have a qualified team member who can solve the problem?  Find one, and quick.  Business waits for no one, especially an entrepreneurial concern.

So whether you plan to hire your own P.I. or you plan to don your own overcoat and magnifying glass, solve your business problems quickly and take control of your company's future...

...and leave the mysteries to the writers.

All my best,

Adam
