A Study In Denial - A Foolish Campaign Draws Attention To A Failure

A Study In Denial - A Foolish Campaign Draws Attention To A Failure

Dear Friends (and Earnest Detractors):

I excerpted (ripped out a page from a magazine in the gym, took it home, and scanned it) the above campaign ad from Rolling Stone Magazine. Since it was a full-page, serious-looking ad, I simply had to read it.

The ad is an attempt, by the print media industry (the magazine and non-newspaper segment), to show that printed magazines are here to stay. The ad even uses a wickedly critical metaphor comparing the internet to "instant coffee," and printed magazines to "the real, fresh-brewed caffeinated steaming ambrosia" that gets us through the days, especially where business meetings are involved.

An audacious comparison. Also, an irrelevant one.

After reading this ad, with its inappropriate metaphor and its "methinks thou doth protest too much" bravado, I came away with the impression, even more so than before, the the magazine industry is absolutely scared to death of the internet; is already feeling the losses; anticipates increasing losses; and is screaming a shrill victory cry even as a sword is plunged into its belly.

This ad speaks of a desperate competitor anticipating the loss of most of its market share and whilstling in the dark.

Any reader with a modicum of intellect and some experience in human interaction will perceive it as such.

Instead of placing this ad in a print magazine, they might have done better (ironically) by advertising and buzzing it up over the internet and through internet-driven social media. They might have reached a wider audience with their message -- and the message shouldn't have contained either the false bravado or the wacky metaphor -- it might have said something about the utility of magazines; perhaps something about their unique tactile quality, the caliber of some of their better, more in-depth research and writing...or maybe that they are easy to read while you are on the stationary bike or treadmill.

Sadly, they didn't think of any of these things. They should have looked into TNNWC Group's NEWS RELEASES, PUBLICITY AND PUBLIC RELATIONS Services. Kent Martin and some of the crew might have prevented them from inadvertently shooting themselves in their collective foot with a weakly defensive message. Our BUZZWORKS TEAM might have gotten the word out through our plethora of of social media channels.

If they had, you might have been reading a magazine (at least while perched on the porcelain throne) for a bit before you read this blog entry.

Doesn't this whole thing just break your heart?

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

TM - TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION REVISITED: Another Possible Method of Drug-Free Stress Reduction.

TRANSCENDENTAL MEDITATION REVISITEDThis article written and © by Douglas Castle.
Published with permission.
Dear Thinkers, Colleagues and Subscribers (Note: These are not mutually exclusive!):

We function in an environment of intense, unrelenting stress, increasing demands upon our fragile psyches, and less and less genuine recreation -- the kind of recreation that fully takes the conscious mind away from its ongoing business dialogue, usually motivated by fear. In writing Braintenance, my blog on cognitive enhancement, I stumbled upon some interesting information regarding Transcendental Meditation. I am neither a cultist, nor a fadist, but I believe that intelligent persons (if you subscribe to TNNW, you are officially an intelligent person - Congratulations!) can glean the true benefit of any system, and segregate it from the foolishness and dogma.

I have done a fair amount of training in NLP, Hypnotherapy, positive visualization, brainwave entrainment, martial arts and numerous other self-growth modalities and techniques to improve my personal and professional life. In fact, they have been so powerfully helpful at enhancing my ability to be positively creative and productive, that I joined forces with Martial Arts Master Joseph Droual some years ago to create and refine the INTERNAL ENERGY PLUS System of learning and entrainment.
The one method which I have yet to dedicate myself to is Transcendental Meditation. I remember as being a sort of fad in the 1970s, but its long-standing adherents seem to been profoundly benefitted by it in terms of stress reduction, blood pressure reduction, increased perspective and focus, mental clarity, improved resting pulse rate, and re-energization. It is my intention to explore it. And while I do not offer medical or health advice, it might be worth looking into for your own benefit. An excerpted clip from a TM seminar announcement follows for your information. I hope that you find it edifying and enjoyable.
Faithfully,
Douglas Castle

One of the most valuable benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique is becoming more creative—becoming more innovative and adaptable in the midst of life’s pressures and challenges.
David LynchAward winning filmmaker David Lynch recently toured U.S. college campuses with world-renowned quantum physicist John Hagelin and brain researcher Fred Travis to present how the TM technique promotes extraordinary creativity and total brain functioning—higher states of consciousness.
You can view their compelling presentation at:
Better than watching their talks, however, is improving your own brain’s orderly functioning by practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique.

A HUMOROUS EXCHANGE WITH AN UNDERSTANDING FRIEND

Dear Readers:

Laughter, and a humorous exchange with associates and colleagues makes for deeper bonding, greater communication and a lighter spirit. Never forget that people do not make business decisions logically -- they tend to want to do business with people they like, and whose company they enjoy. Don't try to be funny if you're not -- that is not the point. The point is that showing your human and non-business side might just be the catalyst that (paradoxically) swings a decision in your favor.

Let your personality come through. Be who you are. Differentiate yourself from all of the other "poured out of the mold" persons.

Being you might just prove to be your greatest strength.

Respectfully,

Douglas Castle

Gabriel:

No I am not. By the way, your great aunt says "Hello". The afterlife is miserable -- they ran out of harps, so I am carrying around an accordion. Fortunately, a chiropractor met his demise two days ago and will work on me as soon as they are finished processing him (an immigration issue, I think) through Upland Security - They have J.Edgar Hoover heading it up. You have to see him in a dress and hosiery...he's seems nicer than I would have thought. Did you know that he's an excellent "charades" player?

I shall indeed call (despite the long distance charge) so that we may get together. I get a furlough every few weeks, although there's always some crap involved about my having to save someone's life and do good deeds and so forth. Man, it never ends...

Oh...hey...gotta go. I'm jamming with George Harrison, Benny Goodman and Luther Van Dross in fifteen minutes.

In friendship and posthumously,

Douglas Castle

p.s. Gregory Hines is teaching me to tapdance!

p.p.s. Also, some guy (Milt?) from your undergraduate school says that I should remind you that you still owe him five dollars. He's in heaven, so he can't charge you any interest. It's against the rules.

THE CASE FOR CITIZEN AMBASSADORS

Dear Readers:

Please take a few moments to review an article from THE INTERNATIONALIST PAGE. The article makes it abundantly clear that those of us who are entrepreneurial in spirit and style have a great deal of social reponsibility at present, and that we have even more of this to look forward to if we are going to be a force for positive change inthis world:

I wish you all peace, prosperity, and excellent health.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
